How to Install a StarRupture Server?
Quick answer: Set up your server step by step – check requirements, install files, configure ports and start the service.
This guide shows you step by step how to set up a StarRupture Dedicated Server – from installation and first world creation to port forwarding.
Note: StarRupture is in Early Access. Features and requirements may change with updates.
Requirements
- Operating system: Windows 10/11 or Windows Server 2019/2022 (64-bit)
- Processor: 4 cores (i5/Ryzen 5 or better)
- RAM: At least 8 GB, 16 GB recommended
- Storage: 30-50 GB free disk space
- Network: UDP port 7777 must be open
- Steam account: Optional, for SteamCMD installation
Step 1: Install server files
There are two ways to get the server files:
Method A: Via Steam (easier)
- Open your Steam library
- Search for StarRupture Dedicated Server (Category: Tools)
- Click Install and wait for the download to complete
Method B: Via SteamCMD (for headless servers)
Run SteamCMD and enter the following commands (App ID is 3809400):
steamcmd +force_install_dir C:\StarRuptureDS +login your_steam_login +app_update 3809400 validate +quit
Step 2: Start the server
Navigate to the installation folder. Right-click SRServerWithLog.bat → Edit. Add in the first line:
start .\StarRuptureServerEOS.exe -Log -port=7777
Save and run the BAT file. A console window opens – the server is now running.
Step 3: Create the first world (Manage Server)
StarRupture has an unusual process: The first world is created from the game client, not on the server itself.
- Launch StarRupture on your PC
- Click Manage Server in the main menu
- Enter your server IP and port (default: 7777)
- Set a server management password
- Optional: Set a player/join password
- Click New Game – this creates the world on the server
- Click Start Game – the server is now running with this world
Step 4: Set up port forwarding
StarRupture uses UDP port 7777 for the game connection and a separate query port.
Windows Firewall (PowerShell as Administrator)
New-NetFirewallRule -DisplayName "StarRupture Server" -Direction Inbound -Protocol UDP -LocalPort 7777 -Action Allow
Router port forwarding
- Forward UDP port 7777 to your server's local IP
- Also forward the query port (default: 7778)
Step 5: Join the server
- Open StarRupture and go to the main menu
- Click Join Game
- Select the Dedicated Server tab
- Enter server IP and port (e.g. 123.456.789.0:7777)
- Enter the player password (if set)
- Click Connect/Join
Step 6: Server configuration (DSSettings.txt)
In the server folder you'll find the file DSSettings.txt. Here's the full configuration:
{
"SessionName": "MyServer",
"SaveGameInterval": "300",
"StartNewGame": "false",
"LoadSavedGame": "true",
"SaveGameName": "AutoSave0.sav"
}
- SessionName: Name of your session and save folder
- SaveGameInterval: Autosave interval in seconds (300 = 5 minutes)
- StartNewGame/LoadSavedGame: After the first world creation ALWAYS set to false/true – otherwise the world will be overwritten on restart
- SaveGameName: The save game to load
Hardware recommendations by playstyle
| Playstyle | RAM | CPU | SaveGameInterval |
|---|---|---|---|
| Casual 2-4 players | 10 GB | Standard | 300 |
| Factory Builder (4 players) | 15-20 GB | High Single-Core | 180 |
| Exploration (long-term session) | 10-15 GB | Standard | 600 |
Common problems
- Server running but no one can join: Check if a world is running (Manage Server → Start Game). Check firewall and port forwarding
- World gone after restart: Check DSSettings.txt: StartNewGame=false and LoadSavedGame=true must be set
- Server lags heavily: Check RAM usage. If over 80%, increase RAM. For large factories choose CPU with high single-core performance
- Wrong password: Management password and player password are different. To join you need the player password
