How to Install Proxmox

This guide shows you step by step how to install Proxmox VE (Virtual Environment) on your server. Proxmox VE is an open-source virtualization platform based on KVM and LXC.

Note: More guides on Backup Server, optimization and integration can be found in the left navigation.

Requirements

Step 1: Download the ISO

  1. Visit proxmox.com/downloads
  2. Download the latest Proxmox VE ISO
  3. Verify the SHA256 checksum of the file

Step 2: Create a bootable USB stick

Write the ISO to a USB stick using Rufus (Windows) or dd (Linux) and boot your server from it.

Step 3: Run the installation

  1. Select Install Proxmox VE in the boot menu
  2. Choose the target disk (ext4 or ZFS)
  3. Set country, timezone and keyboard layout
  4. Set root password and email address
  5. Enter hostname and static network configuration
  6. Start the installation and reboot after completion

Step 4: Open the web interface

After reboot, access the web interface at:

https://your-server-ip:8006

Log in with root and your password (Realm: Linux PAM).

Step 5: Adjust repository (no-subscription)

If you don't use an enterprise subscription, disable the enterprise repository and use the no-subscription repo:

sed -i 's/^deb/#deb/' /etc/apt/sources.list.d/pve-enterprise.list
apt update && apt full-upgrade -y
