Dynmap & BlueMap – Set Up Minecraft Live Map

Minecraft worlds are practically infinite – they stretch over 60 million blocks in each direction. This guide shows you how world generation works, how to create dynamic maps for your server and how to optimize exploration for your players.

Note: Detailed subpages on performance optimization and plugins can be found in the left navigation.

How Big Is a Minecraft World Really?

Dynamic Maps – Live Overview of Your World

With dynamic maps, your players see in real time where they are, where other players are and what they have already explored. The two most popular solutions:

Dynmap (for Bukkit/Spigot/Paper)

Dynmap renders your world as an interactive Google Maps-like map in the browser:

  1. Download Dynmap from the official website
  2. Copy the JAR file into your plugins/ folder
  3. Restart the server – Dynmap generates the map automatically
  4. Open http://your-server-ip:8123 in your browser
  5. The map updates in real time as players explore the world

BlueMap (for Bukkit/Spigot/Paper, Forge, Fabric)

BlueMap is a modern alternative with 3D view:

  1. Download BlueMap from the official website
  2. Copy the JAR file into your plugins/ folder
  3. After the first start, find the map at http://your-server-ip:8100
  4. BlueMap offers an impressive 3D perspective – players can view the world from all angles

Understanding World Generation

Setting Default Description
view-distance 10 How many chunks are loaded around a player. Higher = more exploration, more RAM
simulation-distance 10 How many chunks are actively simulated (animals, plants, redstone)
max-world-size 29999984 Maximum world size in blocks. Smaller values save storage space
worldborder 60000000 Diameter of the visible border for players

Pregenerating Chunks – Stutter-Free Exploration

When players explore new areas, the server has to generate the chunks first – this can cause stuttering. The solution: Pregenerate chunks with plugins like Chunky:

# Install Chunky (Paper/Spigot)
# Place plugin in plugins/, restart server

# Select world
chunky world world

# Set radius (e.g. 5000 blocks)
chunky radius 5000

# Start generation
chunky start

# Show progress
chunky progress

Generation runs in the background and can take several hours depending on the radius. Afterwards, players can explore the world without stuttering.

Storage Space Per World

Radius Chunks Approx. Storage
1,000 blocks ~3,000 100–200 MB
5,000 blocks ~78,000 2–5 GB
10,000 blocks ~314,000 10–20 GB
20,000 blocks ~1,256,000 40–80 GB

Setting a World Border

# Set world border to 5000 blocks
worldborder set 10000

# Slowly shrink border over 60 seconds
worldborder set 10000 60

# Show current size
worldborder get

A world border prevents players from running too far out and wasting storage space unnecessarily.

Multiple Worlds on One Server

With Multiverse (plugin) you can run multiple worlds simultaneously:

# Create a new world
mv create WorldName NORMAL

# Teleport to a world
mv tp WorldName

# List worlds
mv list

Popular for: Survival world + Creative world + Farm world + separate Nether/End.

Common Problems

Server lags when exploring new areas:

Dynmap/BlueMap shows old data:

Storage space explodes:

Detailed guides on Dynmap, BlueMap and world management can be found in the articles in the left navigation.

Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Dynmap not reachable – why?
Open port 8123 (TCP) in firewall. Plugin must be loaded – check logs/latest.log.
Server lags while exploring?
Pre-generate chunks with Chunky and lower view-distance to 6–8.
